With less than a minute left in regulation, Forward Annie Sheehan scored to push #2 Pace Women’s Lacrosse past #11 Regis University Rangers to victory. The Setters move to 4-0, all at home, and 2 of which are versus ranked opponents.
The first two scores of the game belonged to Pace. Marissa Doty had goal #1, Nikki Mottes, scored number 2. Regis had the lead within 1, at 3-2, following their goal at just over 11 minutes left in the quarter. Mackenzie Carita pushed the lead back to 2. With the man advantage, Maddie Schubert, scored Pace’s 5th, seconds before the quarter’s end.
Regis tacked on two goals in the first part of quarter 2. Pace’s lead shrunk from 5-2 to 5-4, courtesy of a Rangers free position goal with 11 minutes left gave them goal number four. The lead finally belonged to Regis with just over 8 to go in the half with their 6th goal of the game,4th of the period. The Setters would stand firm. Annie Sheehan tied it up again at 6 with her first of the game. The halftime score stood there, 6-6.
Regis struck first in the second half, scoring less than two minutes into the resumption of play, the lead back in their favor at, 7-6. The score quickly turned to 8-6 Rangers, with 13:13 left in quarter 3. Sheehan scored a second goal with 9:56 left pulling Pace within 1. A flurry of defensive plays marked the rest of quarter three. Immediately after Sheehan’s goal was three turnovers apiece from both teams. With less than 30 seconds to go until the 4th quarter, Katie Long put a goal away after a pass from Nikki Mottes. Long’s timely first goal tied the game at 8.
Marissa Doty also had good timing for goal number 1 on their year. Her shot put Pace back up 9-8. A foul by Pace granted Regis a free-position try. It was what the Rangers needed to even the game at 9. A second free position in the quarter allowed Regis to lead 10-9. Carita scored again with 8:58 left.
Two clutch saves by goalkeeper Samantha Tanguay prevented the Rangers from breaking the tie. Her second turned into a groundball recovery behind her own net and a timeout call by Coach Molfetta with 1:21 left.
Out of the timeout, over 30 seconds shed off the clock until Pace struck back. Sheehan cut inside to complete the hattrick. Another won draw let Pace run the clock out to victory 11-10.
