Unless you have thousands of dollars to sacrifice to Apple Music, you will never be truly able to own every song you want legally. However, there are ways that you can still have access to a tremendous library of music, and that don’t require downloading anything illegal, just a simple smartphone application! Here are the best smartphone applications that I’ve used to listen to music.

1. Soundcloud: This app is wonderful because most of its features are free and it houses a vast library of music and podcasts. It even lets you upload your own file’s (I’ve used it quite a few times to post podcasts for classes.) It’s a good outlet for artists who are just starting to get their names out there, I’ve had several of my friends who want to go into the music or radio industry use it.

However, often times the official music is taken down and you are left with shitty remixes and covers which can be annoying. There is a paid version which costs $12.99, which I have not used yet, so I cannot properly judge it.

2. Pandora: Who doesn’t like a radio you can take anywhere and customize? I appreciate Pandora because it is free and lets me discovered new music in the genres I love. However sometimes finding the exact song you want can be annoying, since it doesn’t let you choose the song, only the artist. If I’m not in the mode for anything specific this is the app I go too.

3. YouTube: You can find literally anything, and it’s free. Honestly, the only thing that I don’t like about it is that listening to music can be inconvenient since when the app closes so does the video –and the music-. This can be annoying, especially when driving because you need to be constantly maintaining the app in order to keep your music going.

4. Spotify: Honestly the convenience of having access to whatever you want outways the $10 (or the $5 if you’re a college student) cost.The paid version Spotify gives you easy access to an endless library of music, lets you easily create playlists, and even lets you download your songs to listen to offline. I’ve honestly had the best experience with it out of all other apps on this list.
