It’s that time of year again – the holidays are over, and the days still feel glum. It is common for college students to notice a change in mood during the winter months. Mood changes, large or small, can affect a student’s academics, happiness, and overall well-being. This article lays out different ways to boost your mood and motivation during the long winter months.
According to Appalachian State University, “nearly 25% of all college students across the United States suffer from the winter blues”. Symptoms can include, but are not limited to: low energy, persistent sadness, irritability, and decreased interest in activities. College students may also experience sleep disruption, social withdrawal, difficulty concentrating, and decreased academic performance.
So, what causes the winter blues? According to Southern Utah University, the “primary culprit for the winter blues is the lower levels of natural sunlight and less time spent outdoors”. This causes an imbalance of melatonin and serotonin, the hormones for sleep cycles and feelings of happiness and well-being.
It is very common for Pace students to struggle with these symptoms during the long winter months. But how does one fight these negative feelings? Below are a few ways to stay positive and boost your mood with options ranging from $0-$30. Fighting the winter blues can be hard, but it does not have to be impossible.
Although it is cold, going outside regularly can make a big difference in one’s mood. Take a break from your studying to go for a walk, hike, or partake in a winter activity. Throw on your AirPods, listen to some Bad Bunny, and just enjoy the Pace campus. Instead of driving to Miller, try walking. You’ll be amazed by how your mood can shift. Need a positive and uplifting walking playlist? Look no further! Click here for Apple Music and here for Spotify.
The shorter and darker days can put anyone in a funk. Try investing in a sunrise alarm clock. You can program the time you would like your personal sun to rise and set, giving the illusion of a longer day. Wake up earlier, feeling refreshed and ready to attack the day! Some alarms even have bird chirps that can wake you up along with your sunrise. You may have heard of the Hatch alarm clock: the $200 dollar sunrise clock that took TikTok by storm. However, you do not need to spend a week’s paycheck just to wake up rejuvenated. Click here to find an affordable sunrise alarm clock to improve your sleep schedule.
Another way to ease yourself through the day is by keeping a regular schedule. Try to wake up and go to bed around the same time each day, including weekends. Eat three balanced meals and drink plenty of water. Try to incorporate new self-care hobbies into your schedule, such as journaling, reading, and exercising. Even changing small things in your routine can improve your overall mood. Try listening to music or a podcast while you get ready in the morning or writing down three things you’re grateful for before you go to sleep. This is a free and easy way to bring positivity into your daily routine.
Next up, utilize Pace University’s Weekend Wellness series! This is a semester-long program hosted by Pace Residential Life, offering students excursions specifically tailored to improving mental health. Although plans with loved ones may seem daunting, it is in your best interest to spend time with the people you care about. Next time you go to Kessel, invite someone to come. Craving a lazy night in? Have some friends over, make popcorn, and binge-watch Heated Rivalry. Plans with friends do not have to be a burden. Sometimes, having a little companionship is just enough to keep you smiling.
Next, don’t work yourself into the ground all the time. Give yourself a break! Plan a weekly self-care session to refresh your body and your brain. Take an everything shower, put on a face mask, braid your hair, drink some tea, and watch your favorite comfort show. A little self-love can go a long way in a stressful environment.
Lastly, plan something to look forward to, whether it’s a spring break trip or a morning Dunkin run. Having something to look forward to is certain to boost your mood and keep you going! Give yourself little prizes for tasks throughout the week. For example, once you finish your intimidating accounting homework, treat yourself to a Starbucks in Alumni Hall. For every half hour spent studying, give yourself five minutes of phone time. Sometimes it’s the little things that bring motivation to your day-to-day life.
The long winter months can be hard for anyone. However, the best thing you can do is take care of yourself. Try your best to find motivation in any aspect of your life. Just keep looking forward and remember that every day you are alive is a day worth living.
