What draws the interest to big named teams? Some people who have different viewpoints, and there are  indeed more than one correct answers. In my opinion the biggest draw to a game is its rivalry. Ohio State vs.  Michigan, Brady vs. Manning, and Lakers vs. Celtics are among some of the greatest rivalries in sports, if you notice that in my short list Yankees vs. Red Sox is not included, and that is because that rivalry is dead.

This rivalry partially died two years ago when Yankees captain and shortstop Derek Jeter decided to retire, and the Red Sox decided to honor Jeter when he played his last game at Fenway Park.

But then this rivalry completely fell off the map when it was reported that the Yankees will honor David Ortiz when he plays his final game in the Bronx later this month.

For the people who think that I’m being cruel need to go back and research the history of this rivalry. Moments like Pedro Martinez taking Yankees bench coach Don Zimmer and viciously throwing him down, or the fight between Jason Varritek made this rooted in bad blood and hatred, but also the best rivalry in sports.

I can remember jumping in excitement when the Yankees beat in Red Sox  in game seven of the 2003 ALCS because of Aaron Boone’s walk of home run. I also remember crying when the Red Sox came back from 3 games down to take the next four from the Yankees and become the only team ever to come back from a 3-0 deficit and win the 2004 ALCS.

But that was then and when Jeter retired, the player who always killed the Red Sox received cheers as the Red Sox honored his career, instead they should have booed Jeter and when the Yankee killer Ortiz comes to Yankee stadium I hope Yankee fans will let him know how they really think of him.
